And one day, it will occur to you that you\u2019re actually happy and enjoying your life. Will eating salads and drinking water make your boredom go away? Not exactly, but it can make you feel better, which has a ripple effect on whether or not you enjoy your life. One of the best things you can do for yourself when you\u2019re feeling bored in sobriety is to find a way to serve others. Exercise is critically important in early sobriety and for ongoing mental health and wellness.<\/p>\n<p><img class='aligncenter' style='display: block;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;' src=\"https:\/\/ecosoberhouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/feed_images\/meditation-for-addiction-recovery-methods-and-techniques-300x200.webp\" width=\"303px\" alt=\"drinking out of boredom\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You might have a drink to calm your mind, mellow out your mood, and take the edge off stress.<\/li>\n<li>But when you add bored drinks to social drinking, alcohol has the opposite effect.<\/li>\n<li>Every month, we launch fun challenges, like Dry\/Damp January, Mental Health May, and Outdoorsy June.<\/li>\n<li>One of the most effective ways to combat boredom is by developing new interests or hobbies.<\/li>\n<li>For example, I often drink when I\u2019m bored, but what I thought was going to be a helpful tip sheet for fighting those boredom binges suggested I find new hobbies and get exercise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But these judgments that we can make about ourselves are rarely fair or accurate. Instead, try to reframe times of boredom as opportunities to do the meaningful things you\u2019ve not had time for until now. Boredom is the best excuse to finally getting around to doing these things that can enhance one\u2019s life. Say, for example, that it\u2019s Friday night and you\u2019re alone with no plans. I get a free night all to myself to do whatever I want.\u201d Or, <a href=\"https:\/\/ecosoberhouse.com\/\">https:\/\/ecosoberhouse.com\/<\/a> on the other hand, you might think, \u201cIt\u2019s a happening Friday night, and I\u2019m all by myself with nothing to do. I\u2019m a loser.\u201d In the second case, boredom is going to feel much more painful\u2014and a drink (or two, or three) may prove harder to resist.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, this pattern of behavior can inculcate a kind of learned helplessness, so that every time a person drinks to relieve boredom, they reinforce this learned helplessness. However, feeling bored without alcohol isn\u2019t actually a bad thing. And the sickness and tiredness you feel after the initial high of alcohol <a href=\"https:\/\/ecosoberhouse.com\/article\/boredom-drinking-and-how-to-stop-it\/\">drinking out of boredom<\/a> consumption wears off is neither fun nor interesting.<\/p>\n<p><img class='aligncenter' style='display: block;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;' src=\"https:\/\/ecosoberhouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/feed_images\/meditation-for-addiction-recovery-methods-and-techniques-img-2-768x512.webp\" width=\"309px\" alt=\"drinking out of boredom\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Boredom can indeed lead to cravings for alcohol, but it doesn&#8217;t have to be this way. With understanding and a few targeted strategies, you can retrain your brain to seek healthier, more fulfilling ways to escape boredom. Our brain also becomes accustomed to the presence of alcohol and starts to see it as the \u201cnew normal.\u201d So when there&#8217;s no alcohol, things seem a bit off. The brain starts to signal the craving for alcohol, not just to seek pleasure but also to restore what it perceives as normalcy. Drinking alone can become problematic when a person has a habit of doing it. You may believe you must hide your drinking from others, so you drink solo.
